Photographer’s Exhibit Gives ‘Gifts of Time’
Sarah Harless Featured in State Capitol’s North Gallery through February 3
OKLAHOMA CITY - A visit to the state Capitol through February 3 will provide visitors a view into a simpler way of life. Through the February date in the Capitol’s North Gallery, Sarah Harless’ exhibit, The Gifts of Time, conveys yesteryear’s “simpler” life in a series of photographs.
Set against a serene western backdrop, Harless’ images pay tribute to traditions of past generations, when people lived off the land. Harless’ subjects include the people, rain, livestock and nature at the center of the land’s natural gifts.
In her photography Harless harnesses the natural light to accentuate the dry dust in the air, low morning fog, or oncoming rainstorms often associated with western environs. From buffalo roaming under an ultramarine sky to the dust-filled air stirred by a herd of bulls, color plays a key role for Harless in expressing a scene’s mood.
“Colors are similar to life," Harless said. "Sometimes life looks bright, sometimes it pushes and pulls you in many directions, and sometimes there are just shades of gray.”
In the colors and subjects of her images, Harless seeks to capture a time when life was closely connected to the land.
“There is an importance of the older ways of life that we seem to forget about today,” Harless said.
Sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council, the exhibit is free and open to the public weekdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend visitors should enter through the Capitol’s west entrance.
The public is invited to an artist reception in the North Gallery December 18, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
